I have seen this activity often on Pinterest. You have your client draw a heart and then divide compartments within it. They assign different feelings, thoughts, people, and stressors into the compartments of the heart. The basic benefit is the separation of the thoughts from the person’s mind and the creation of something tangible to represent something abstract so that it can be manipulated, talked about and changed.

When using this technique with a teenager, my purpose was to highlight how much of her heart was in her relationship and the risk she was taking by allowing the relationship to have such a large piece. We were able to identify what else she would like to be passionate about and imagine what it would look like to have more balance.

What’s in your heart?
